ILLINOIS AUDUBON SOCIETY HEADQUARTERS
The Illinois Audubon Society, a private, non-profit statewide conservation organization who's mission is to promote the perpetuation and appreciation of the native flora and fauna of Illinois and the habitats that support them, was searching for a new headquarters building in the State Capitol. They decided to move to the Margery Adams Wildlife Sanctuary, a 40 acre site in the middle of town, which has been left in its natural state since the early 1930's. The project was to restore and add on to the Adams farmhouse, which is one of the oldest buildings (Lincoln Era) remaining in the city and has been a landmark on the near northeast side of Springfield for nearly 150 years. The 1100 SF historic structure had been an interpretive center for the over 3000 people who visit the site annually, but was in disrepair. As a part of this project, the Adams House was renovated to provide offices, conservatory functions and museum displays. The new 3900 SF addition houses offices, support functions and Jochens Hall, a 2-story meeting and instructional space that overlooks the Sanctuary. The project is currently under review for LEED certification.
